I’ve started a brand new monthly series—about books!
Each month I plan to share five of my current favorite books (and other fun reading material) that have caught my eye. Subjects will vary, but expect a lot of literature, retro lifestyle and fashion, and biographies. At least for now—who knows what books I’ll notice next.
For now, let’s dive into the first edition of What’s On My Bookshelf!
CLOUD CUCKOO LAND, by Anthony Doerr
Big surprise: You knew this book was coming. If you follow me on Instagram, you’ll know how excited I am over Doerr’s superb style and skill as a storyteller. Not to mention that he won the Pulitzer Prize. Complex, with lyrical prose and a woven timeline similar to ALL THE LIGHT WE CANNOT SEE, this one promises to be just as marvelous.
OUR RAINBOW QUEEN, by Sali Hughes
I have long insisted that Queen Elizabeth is far more fashionable than people give her credit for being. This book proves it. Which delights my prognosticating little heart to no end, ha ha. While her sartorial approach was never as of the moment as her sister Margaret’s was, Her Majesty knows how to step out in style. I especially enjoyed the photos, some of which I had never seen before. It’s the Queen and fashion. What more need I say?
THE LITTLE PARIS BOOK SHOP, by Nina George
This warm, charming tale chronicles literary apothecary Monsieur Jean Perdu as he leaves his floating bookshop (located on a beautifully restored barge on the Seine) to search for his lost love. We’re entering the frigid depths of winter here, so I can’t wait to cozy up with leftover Christmas cookies on a snowy day and delve into the magical world Nina George creates.
AUDREY HEPBURN, AN ELEGANT SPIRIT, by Sean Hepburn Ferrer
I am inspired by everything about Audrey: her life, her elegance and beauty, her kindness, and her humanitarianism. So when I spotted this book at an antique store recently, I instantly had to have it. This is a memoir told mostly in candid photos tied together with deft prose from her son, Sean. Spanning her entire career and life pre- and post-Hollywood, this book satisfied. So much so that I am reading it again.
HOW TO BAKE ANYTHING GLUTEN FREE, by Becky Excell
This book is a no-brainer for anyone who loves baking but to whose immune system gluten is public enemy #1. Gluten free baking is notoriously challenging, as you’re essentially trying to build a house without using anything to support the house’s structure. Not my best metaphor, but you get the point: Baking without gluten is a recipe for disaster. It also tastes like crap most of the time. So I’m quite excited to see the tips Becky offers for successful gluten free baking. You can bet I will try ALL the recipes.
