I have made a discovery. Skin Food doubles as a splendid budget eye cream.
Those of you who keep abreast of the latest and greatest within the beauty world will no doubt have heard of Skin Food from Weleda and its powerhouse, plant-based moisturizing abilities. Thick and intensely rich, and formulated without parabens or mineral oil, it has softened the scales of winter-afflicted dry skin sufferers since 1926 and is touted as a “must have” skin care staple by beauty editors. Me? I was introduced to it as a young girl by my dear mother. Always ahead of the trends, am I. Ha ha ha.
Anyway, Weleda describes the original Skin Food formula as being a “skin savior” and “the ultimate moisturizer for rough, dry skin”. Indeed it is. Leathery elbows, flaky shins, and crocodile heels are greased into smoothness by the product’s high levels of sweet almond oil, sunflower seed oil, and beeswax. So high in fact, that Skin Food is too sumptuous to use on all but the driest of parched skins, I would think. So you would be forgiven for thinking that I am crazy for putting it on my combo-meets-oily face.
Which makes my discovery even more exciting. (For me, anyway. Try not to yawn—I’m easily amused, I’m afraid.)
Desperation Or Genius?
Finding myself without an eye cream one night, I spied the little green tube and had an idea. I patted a smooth scrim of it gently atop my ashy-hued dark circles, hoping I hadn’t made a greasy mistake. To my surprise, my under-eyes were noticeably smoother in the morning. The grey, slightly sunken appearance of the night before was plumped away, replaced by bright, refreshed skin. Oils and beeswax to plump, extracts of chamomile and calendula to soothe? Yes please. I tried it the next night, and the next, and the next. Same results. I haven’t looked back.
Now I can’t promise that if Frankenstein slathered his face in Skin Food every night he would look like Fabio, but I can say that Skin Food as an eye cream works for me. A little goes a long way. I apply less than a pea-sized amount at night on my under eyes, eye lid, and entire orbital socket. At $2.99 for the travel size tube, it’s an economical (and certified natural) little soother of an eye cream.
Find it on Amazon here or for $2.99 (plus shipping) at Weleda’s website here.
